A couple of questions on these grackles, Paul. Do the feathers around their neck area have a greenish sheen to them? And when they make their sounds, do they puff themselves up? Just trying to figure out what has taken over my feeders now.

Is that an Atlantic Boattailed Grackle? Nice shot Speed. How close were you?
It's a decent shot, but Paul sent me a 30 second edit that looks a LOT better.
It's a grackel is all I know. We have several different kinds of grackles here in eastern NC, and I couldn't tell you which sub-species any of them are.
I was probably about 30 feet away from it. This is a crop of the original shot, so it looks like I was closer. Sorry I didn't label it as a cropped shot. I'll be sure to do that in the future.
They are called Boat-tailed Grackles (atlantic subspecies is the main one), so yes you are correct
The gulf coast birds have a brown eye which makes them a subspecies of BTGR.
Now that we know what it is, why don't you post that edit you sent me and tell us how you made such a big improvement in 30 seconds.
I thought about adding some exposure compensation to help bring out the details in the bird. But that would have blown out the sky, and your edit improved the sky as well.
