    Bear Cubs

Took this one a couple weeks back. I ran into a mother bear and her three cubs as I walked along an old railroad bed. Two cubs were up in the tree the third was down below hanging out with mom. Two years ago I saw a bear and three cubs in this exact same place, the cubs were even sleeping in the same tree.

That's great Mike!! The only time I have ever seen bears in the wild, has been while going down the road, or about a mile away.

These are the first bears I've seen this year. I've been going by this place every few weeks since April hoping to see this bear again.I read that a bear will have cubs every two years and it was two years ago that I saw the bear there. While I was taking these pictures another guy came there with a camera and tripod to take their pictures. He told me he had seen them in the same tree a couple weeks before. He was using a Rebel film camera so I offered to let him hook it up to my set up but he didn't want to. Next spring I'm going to have to keep an eye on a tree just off the road in Stillwater, a lady I work with called me last year to tell me about a mother bear and four cubs. Seems the bear used this old hollow tree as a den, of course she saw the bear on a saturday and didn't call me until monday by then it had moved into the woods and I didn't get a very good look at it.

It's not exactly a road but an old railroad right of way that is now used as a hiking and biking trail. It is amazing to see these animals wandering around. The other guy taking the cubs picture said to me he wondered how many people walk by them every day without even knowing they are there. Here is the first glimpse I got of Mama before I knew she was a mama.

I think I've seen more while in my car than I have when I'm out walking in the woods. I did have one come within 40 feet of me a couple years back and I think it was this same mother bear. I was watching it in the same place when all of a sudden it started moving, it kind of walked in my direction but was not coming straight toward me. I lost sight of it in some thick stuff next thing I knew it came right up on the railroad bed stopped looked straight at me and then went on its way with the little ones right behind her. There are a lot of trails at this State Park and I think there must have been people on one of them behind the tree they were hanging out in that spooked her in my direction.
One of the NJ papers today had a picture of a bear that a cat had chased up a tree, looked pretty funny to see this huge bear up a tree and this little cat at the bottom looking up at it.

Here's one of the third cub that staid down on the ground with mama. I had to shoot this one manual focus, there was to much brush between me and them. This one is cropped a bit to since the tree on the right was really over exposed. I never didn get a decent shot of mama bear.
