    Backyard Birds

No idea what these are but it's nice to see and hear the birds coming back to the yard.

    Re: Backyard Birds

If #1 is a Snow Bunting, then it is most likely headed north to the Arctic and could be a male or female in breeding plummage, but other than that, don't know...beak is the right shape and the right colour and the breast is the right colour- size is also about right, but without seeing the back, it is hard to say. We have literally hundreds of them that winter on the prairies east of the city, in fact all over the prairies - colours are different when they are not breeding. I was out about a month ago (during one of our warmer winter breaks - January thaw) and spent about 30-40 minutes one afternoon, parked beside a country road, surrounded by a flock of maybe 300 to 400 of them - it was hard to know where to aim the camera first. When I get a minute a I will try and post a couple of my better shots.

I could see that with winter color and body shape and lighting of the shot.... but don't know... with that a dark beak?

Oh no! I expected to see the answer from Paul this morning.

What about a female House Sparrow? There is a bit of a light line behind the eye and nothing else would be visible at this perfect angle. As you said; big, black finch beak.
