    Back from holiday.

Well i am back off my holidays which unfortunately was a very wet one! continuous rain for 13 days! which kept the wildlife very quiet, but it didnt get us down too much, so as we were camping next to a river the swallows and swifts kept us occupied, and i cant say i have'nt had plenty of panning practice! so i have posted some of the shots i managed to catch of the swallows and one of the swallows even rested up in a tree near where we were photographing.

    Welcome back, Bev!

While you were away, I took the opportunity to post in-flight bird shots. Now that you're back, I'll stop

    Great shots as always.

    And the uploads are clean

And doesn't it always rain over there?!

    Re: Back from holiday.

Awesome stuff ! I tried this and got 0 out of 20 shots.
The second and fourth are wonderful, the second the best of the lot for me.

How far away were you for these shots?
How were you focussing, manually, or using servo AI AF?
What lens, the 70-200 or 75-300?

Oh and the rain, well we're in the middle of a drought with hosepipe bans - so you can expect that
I'm off to the morris ring meet at Thaxted tomorrow, so I expect it to rain.

Is it just me (with lots-o-wine) or am I not understanding any of that

Yes, Bev what is your mode of focusing? I have not a chance using AF with the 10D so I shoot manually. Can the 20D keep up?

    Re: Back from holiday.

Thanks Loupey, Paul, Paulnj for your kind comments, answering your questions, firstly i was between approx 15-25 yards away, i was standing on the river bank and when i saw the birds coming down the river i focus on them using Ae/Af, No AE lock mode, which i find (for me) so much easier for quick, erratic moving objects, then hopefully keeping the bird in the view finder pan the camera (hopeing they dont do loop the loops! or likewise)and fire away, also the camera is in Al servo, the lense is the 70-200L f2.8 IS USM, i am perservering trying in manual mode but for subjects like these i am finding it quite a challenge!!

Loupey, i have followed your instructions everytime for the downloading and its made all the difference, thank you. Oh and i know your kidding, but dont you dare stop posting your bird in flight shots, they are great. Hope you have a great day at your Morris meet Paul, I am hoping i have this right and you are talking about Morris Dancers? (otherwise i am going to look a right plum) if its as hot in Thaxted as it is here today im sure you'l have a colourful time. Look forward to seeing some shots of it.

    Re: Back from holiday.

We did have the Redcar sword dancers, but they were true sword not he double handled rapper sword so they couldn't do the intracate moves with the bent rapper.
Still a good day, and the Wesminster Unicorn was on form as usual ...
