    assorted stuff

I've been in a rut the last couple of weeks, despite good opportunities to shoot - this weekend I made a fire-sale run to Louisville and Slade Kentucky to see the louisville zoo and the Kentucky reptile zoo, but came back with only a mixed bag of shots. Some of these are typically me, some of these are out of my usual style. In any case, I hope you enjoy them!

A garter snake found in the south suburbs on thursday - I was itching to get out of town. Seemed like a nice day to walk prarie edges in search of basking snakes, I was right.

Golden toad. These little guys are extinct, which is a shame.

Kentucky reptile zoo - worth the trip, and made the trip worthwhile. Pretty close to 500 miles each way, and almost 6 tanks of gas. In two days.

I'm not really up on my african vipers, but I think this is atheris chlorechis.

and this, of course, is cerastes cerastes.

The Reptile zoo is in Slade KY, about an hour and a half south east of Lexington, in the foothills of the mountains. I promise it is the only reptile zoo in Slade, although there is some other crazy roadside zoo advertised there - I think they have stuff like lions, rather than snakes. The KRZ specializes in extraction and sells the dehydrated venom to pharm companies, who make antivenin and drugs for stuff like hypertension and cholesterol. They have a LOT of venomous snakes. I prefer the native stuff, but their exotic collection is nice too. Let them know that you are snake savvy and you will get a better tour - we got to see the lab and were even allowed to flip a bunch of tin and boards on their property (found two KY kings underneath). The natural bridge park is just up the street and is worth seeing too - we would have made it except that one of our group flipped a log with a wasp's nest in it, which made for a hasty detour.

Great series, I especially like that 4th shot of the lizard. Very different with the tail toward the camera and the focus on the head, a neat perspective for sure.

Very cool images! I love that golden toad(extinct in the wild I take it?), the day gecko and the bush viper.
