I mentioned in another recent thread that the small pond that I am going to is shrinking (due to dry weather) and full of bull frogs and at least one carnivorous mallard
On any given day I can see 30-40 bull frogs on the banks and in the water. I've been trying to get a shot of one jumping after flying dragonflies (which happens a lot). Problem is, the dragonflies never hold still - but the frogs do. So I'm never pointed at the right frog at the right time.
This time, I saw this female dragonfly rythmically dipping her abdomen (laying eggs I presume). I saw that two frogs nearby also saw her and began to army crawl towards her location. I knew this was the best opportunity to capture it so I had my 300mm + 2x trained on the dragonfly with my right eye while watching the approaching frogs with the left eye. They must have been very close to the edge of my frame because as soon as I saw it jump after it, I tripped the shutter (which you can see was a little late). Anyway, he missed and I missed. Funny as heck to watch though.
These are full frame images just moments apart.
