Question What's a good photo printer?

I really don't know much about photography. I only take pictures of our life. I do love having photos, though. I take hundreds of them. I am looking for a very good printer. However, I don't want to go crazy. I have an Olympus digital camera, which I hate, and in the next year I will buy a good digital Cannon camera (also, not professional). What would be a great printer that would print great photos, but would not exceed my abilities? I know I want seperate color cartriges and OK speed. Please! Help me! I have been looking at various reviews all over the Internet, but I have only gotten more confused. My husband got me Cannon i9900, but it's HUGE and I think it does more than we need.
    Thanks again!

You already have a good Photo Printer with the Canon I9900.

I agree. The i9900 is indeed a great printer. I can see no reason to part with it to buy something smaller. It can print any size image you want from 4x6 to 13x44 or so. While you may not want (or ever need) to print at 13", why limit yourself? I would definitely keep what you have. It really is better than most cheaper printers.

We just got the i9900 and can exchange it for something else. We live in an apartment with limited space and the printer is absolutely huge (23in), too big for our space. I think I should find an alternative that would better suit our needs (my husband agrees, he was shocked with the size). Thanks!

If you want something that is smallish but still very good, I would recommend the Epson R800. It uses Epson's archival pigment inks so your printed images will last longer than if printed with standard inkjet inks. For that matter, most of Epson's printers are pretty good. I have never had good luck with HP printers, but then again I don't own any of their new ones either.

Thanks for your advice. I didin't even look at Epsons. I think zdnet wasn't too charmed by them, but then, I have not been super impressed with their highest ranking items. Thanks!

Epson R800 is the smallest I would go, I have obtained a R1800 the big brother of the R800 and it is a very nice printer. The images from the R800 that Epson sent me are very very good as well. Gut you need to have your monitor calibrated correctly and have the work-flow from camera to monitor to software (like Photoshop) to printer all correctly setup to get good consistent results. If they are, then the results could disappoint. One thing with Epson printers, only use their ink (yes isn't cheap) and their paper or papers that are recommended by them, otherwise you will chase your tail on good results as well.

Just wait and think..... about that photo you are going to take and end up wanting to print a large print of.

Epsons and Canon Printers are the best printers, and the least costly to print with. Epson Printers and inks seem to be a little better than Canon.
