You can't go wrong with a Canon. There a several of them in my house. They are nice rugged cameras. If you are mainly going for 4x6 prints any of them will do.

Plenty of pro and user reviews on this site too. Also, check the coverage of the 2008 PMA show which is the big annual trade show that happened about a month ago in Las Vegas.

I have a Canon FTb. Its probly much larger then you were thinking. It is roughly 2 lbs and a manual but it was bought new in 1971, has been droped and messed with by an 8 yr/old been threw gales on the great lakes, the top of Pikes Peak and everything in between, and even sat for 20 years and it still works great. I can also recomend an Olympus d-540 zoom, this camera has been to Iraq twice and been threw everything that entails and also works like a dream its also light, compact and easy to get a great picture with. You didnt specify if you wanted manual.

Try any camera before you purchase. If you do water sports, sailing, etc purchase at lest a weather prof or a water resistant(prof) camera. Just remember that shutter delay is a problem with most PS cameras.
