vignette filters

Can anyone help me to find a set of vignette filters that are no longer being sold....(i.e.) keyhole, star, etc. I used to have a set and would like to find a set now. They were black cardboard-like cutout filters. Thank you very much, Penny

Cokin makes a pre-shaped sandwich mount lens filter pack with cutout shapes like you describe (you didn't specify, but I assume you want camera lens filters, not darkroom ones).

Cokin is the only one I know of as well. I think they're plastic and should last much longer than cardboard.

I think these would be pretty easy to make if they don't have the shape you're looking for.

They've got a bunch of them. Try looking for Cokin's website or a catalog at a local camera store. With this system you will need a filter holder and a lens adapter. I think they have a starter kit, just be sure to get the right series ("A" or "P" based on what filters you're using) and the right diameter lens adapter (whatever the filter diameter of the lens is).

I am new to this......How do I find out what series I need ( A or P ). I know that we use the 58 series lenses. I assuming that is the diameter of the lens. I have the Cannon ELOS ELAN NE 35mm SLR camera. Can you help me out?

The "A" series are the smaller sized filters and it looks like they will go up to a filter size of 62mm. You'd be OK of course with the 58mm that you have now but if you ever add a lens that has a larger filter diameter than 62mm, you wouldn't be able to use these. The "P" series goes up to 82mm, and that's what I've used (but not the vignette filters). Looks like there are two other sizes available too but I'm not familiar with them. These vignette filters (that they call pre-shaped frames) are available in either "A" or "P".

Personally, I'd stick with "P" series for the reason above. There are also other companies that make filters that go into this system like some of the Singh-Ray polarizers (but they're very expensive). The starter pieces are cheap enough for either, but if you have a collection of filters that can be an investment. "P" series filters will cost more up front because they are larger, but you won't have to worry. The starter pieces you need are a filter holder and lens adapter. Cokin has kits like this one for the "A" series...
