    D300

I don't se any point in going to the D700 unless you absolutely have to have 6400 ISO regularly.

The D300 will work with any DX lenses that you have already. With the D700 you need FX (film) format lenses. And if I was going to buy FX nowadays I would only get the very best i.e. the 24-70 f2.8 etc. This means:

    1. Much heavier investment than just the camera body
    2. The whole thing would be much bigger and heavier than what I have today

I really like the 18-200VR DX, the 16-85VR DX. Great performance, very versatile, small size, reasonable cost - the D700 makes no sense to me

Old Timer is pleased as punch with his D700 and has shown several very nice shots with it in various threads. The fx/dx lens issue is only a big deal if you have a lot of lenses and will need to buy a lot more.

The D700 will definitely be better in lower light, but you will only be able to effectively use FX-format lenses. The D700 is more pricey, slightly larger, and heavier.

If you already own any DX lenses, then you should strongly consider the D300, since you will be able to use them – and not spend more on new lenses. Both cameras are relatively new and with improved sensors, and both will do very well in a wide range of lighting situations.

There is also a larger lineup of DX lenses. Also, having a 1.5X crop factor sensor allows you to take advantage of a full-format lens's "sweet spot". :yesnod:

One Error: with the D700 you can use a DX lenses as the D700 talks to the lenses (all the newer ones that is) and adjusts the size of the of sensor used, just like to other
    FX sensor Nikon camera.
