    tripod

just bought a new lense the nikon 70-300mm VR lense. Much heavier beast than the de facto one I got with my D40. So now my tripod which was not very good anyway is definitely not good enough to hold the weight. Any recommendations - not looking to go crazy on this was looking at the 190XPROB and was just wondering if anyone had experience with it or something similar and what would be the best head to go with it?

    Cheers

    Don't forget that you'll need a head.
Here's a link to our reviews..open the one on tripods and/or tripod heads and you'll find lots of reviews though I didn't look for your particular choice.
Choose wisely.....its the third most important item you'll ever own,(after body and lens), and should last a lifetime

edit.....ok, I didn't find a review of it here but found this one http://www.futurelooks.com/manfrotto...tripod-review/

Now you have me interested especially with that low shoot ability.

Hopefully someone here that has it will respond.

    Re: tripod

I have it with the RC 482 ball head and I love it.

It takes my 5D and 100-400L lens happily.

Question is what are you photographing with the tripod? As this will dictate the type of head you need.

    Re: tripod

Thanks guys - I hope to photograph or at least experiment with night skies, wildlife, portraits - pretty much anything - so it would need to be as flexible as possible without it being so pricey that it is a good reason for divorce ;)

Looks a good review will give that a good read and the ball head pointer sounds great too - thanks again.

    Re: tripod

Robert, I have the 190 with the 486MGRC0 ball head. Just love them both. They handle my 5D and my 100-400 very well. Whatever head you decide on, you may want to think about a head with levels on it so that it can be level even if your tripod is not. Also, you may want to look at a head with a quick release plate. These (levels and quick release) are two of the reasons I bought the 468. Once you have tried a quick release plate you will never go back. HTH.

Good point on the quick releases - I have one on the camera, 100-400L, and my Pro 1. The 482 has a level built in.

    Re: tripod

I have to say that I am very happy with my purchase of tripod and head. I purchased these for my XTi and have shot with the Canon 100-400 lens with no problems. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...g.html#reviews, http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...d_w_Rapid.html. The tripod legs are great if you are tall but the weight might be the only downside.

    hi Guys
Long time since my original post but I have been away with work ! My wife is going to buy this for my Christmas so I need to provide the details - both the heads mentioned don't seem to be on sale anymore so I was wondering what you thought of this one?
    Thanks

    Hi,

Don't know what happened there but here is the URL again

    http://www.warehouseexpress.com/prod...aspx?sku=10921

There isn't a level on the head but the tripod I have does have a level. I don't normally worry about levels when out in the field. I tend to take a level based on the frame of the viewfinder.

Hope that helps and the url works.
