taking photos without using a flash

Hi everyone,
My question has to do with taking pictures without flash. I like to take pictures without the flash, but I find when I do they usually are blurry. What are some things to keep in mind to make sure your pictures are clear, but without the flash? I know I need a sufficiant amount of light, but is there anything else? thanks.

Blur is lack of focus, subject movement and/or camera movement. Each of these could be a book. Some examples? - TF

Tripod,shutter speed,wireless remote are three things that come to mind.I also use shutter delay as I have a heavy trigger finger.Hope this advice helps.

The above advice is correct. You need faster shutter speeds which you can achieve by larger aperture and/or higher iso. Even those won't help if its too dark and then you must use the above advice.

For photography film or digital you need the correct exposure. You have three variables, Aperture (the size of the opening of the lens), Shutter speed, and ISO(sensitivity of the film/sensor). You will get blurry pictures if the shutter speed is below a threshold and it depends on your subject and how still you can hold the camera. The amount of light gathered by the camera has to be the same for any ISO. The light gather is determined by the aperture, smaller F stop more light and the shutter speed the slower speed more light.

To get good non-blurry photos, of let say of equestrian event inside a arena. As you can't use flash you need a lens with a aperture greater or equal to F2.8 and a ISO setting of 800 or higher and you have to keep the shutter speed about 1/250 second of faster to stop the movement of the feet of the horse. This was a problem even with DSLR just a few years ago but all the new DSLR have much better noise control at the high ISO's now it's not that much of a problem now.
