    Sigma vs Canon telephoto lens?

Due to some great feedback regarding my search for a telephoto lens (thanks to those who took the time to respond), I've narrowed down my search to a non IS 70-200 mm f/2.8 lens. I'm between the Sigma and Canon version. Besides price, is there any other difference major difference?

Re: Sigma vs Canon telephoto lens?

I can't say for the 70-200, but when I was looking for 100-400 on the cheap, I tried the Sigma 80-400 and was seriously disappointed.
Autofocus wasn't fast enough for motorsport, IS wasn't as accurate as the Canon.
I ended up returning the Sigma and buying the Canon L alternative.

I don't know if the same holds for the 70-200 as for the longer lenses.
I've already bought two Canon 70-200 L IS, one for backup since I dropped one
At least you won't have the IS issue to think about !

The 70-200 2.8 is a very fast, cheap and extremely good lens. It's a dream to use, handle and work with. I'd go as far to say it's the best midrange telephoto zoom canon has ever released. I've handled the sigma 80-400 too, and I wouldn't be able to offer a fair comparison because the two instances were very varied.. but from what I see online of examples others have done with the 70-200 canon, I always think to myself; "God dam i want that lens" I think i'd like it over the 100-400, in fact!
