Screwed up menus on Canon Xti - anyone else?

I usually shoot in Manual mode and recently noticed it seems to be overiding my settings with it's own - as if it were in auto mode. Well, scrolling through the menu I then noticed that when in various modes, the menu does not show the correct mode! For instance, when in Portrait, it reads Landscape on the menu, Landscape is still landscape, Closeup is okay, but Action is now close-up, Night is now Flash-off and Flash-off is still flash off; Auto is now P, P is P mode, Tv mode is okay, Av mode is Tv, M is now A-Dep and A-dep is still A-Dep.
You see the problem here?! I just downloaded the new update hoping that may correct the prob and it has not, I cleared all camera settings and manual settings and that didn't correct it. I think this thing is on crack! Anyone else have this prob? Of course i've moved twice in the past 3 months and can't find my warranty. ARGH!

It may be that your mode control dial is messed up. I had that happen on an A2, it needed repair, I can't remember what it cost.

I called canon support regarding this and they seem to think it's a software issue within the camera. It would take 7-10 days to fix, from what they said, which would put me out of business - its that competitive here. So, i'm not sure what i'm going to do right now, but I'll have to figure something out. I can still shoot, i'm just limited and have to make sure the photos look okay after each shot (some end up looking blurry because it suddenly decides to go to slow shutter!)

It sounds to me like your camera is possessed. Good luck with shooting amidst your technical problems. BTW, did you know that your website is temporary unavailable?

janie, just a thought FWIW. :idea: If you have a card reader for your memory cards on your computer, you could try going to Canon's website and downloading the latest version of the firmware, for your camera, into your computer and then onto a memory card. Put the memory card into the camera and see if that will fix what has happened. On my 350D, Canon issued a firmware upgrade a few months after I bought the camera and that is exactly what I did, and it worked okay - no problems.

As with anything like this, there is always a bit of risk.

Didn't work - hmmmmm - that surprises me a bit. Does sound like you are up the proverbial creek without a paddle!! :mad2: Could you rent one while this one is being fixed? I know a lot of places rent lenses, but I do not know about cameras. Just another thought FWIW.

I'm thinking that, if your income is dependent upon your camera functioning, you probably ought to invest in a second body.

I guess it isn't a software issue if the update didn't fix it. Looking at a picture of your mode control dial everything seems to have slipped a little to the next item on the mode control dial.
This does sound very similar to what happed to my A2(many A2s actually). Whatever controls the switching of modes sounds like it has become detached from the mode control dial(some bit of metal that makes contacts on the body switching modes) and has some play now between the plastic dial and the metal contact.
I would bet if you continued to play with your mode control dial it would be inconsistent as to which mode it was in. In other words: sometimes it would be in the correct mode, sometimes one mode above or below the correct mode on the dial, depending on which way you are turning the mode dial.
My A2 first lost it's detents, then some ability to control the mode, then it just stayed on whatever mode it broke completely on.
Whatever it is I guess I have no real words of encouragement, it looks like it will require a trip to Canon.
