    Cool Scheimpflug!

Im taking a 4x5 view camera class and I got almost everything down and out the way. But I always have the same reoccurring question pop to mind when I think about scheimpflug. How would one visualize what a plane looks like?? Cause for example if I take a picture of a flat object like a wall with everything set up at 0 degrees front and rear standard on the same plane as the flat wall, so everything should be sharp even when its wide open. But take that same scenario and point the whole camera on the tripod upwards, would there be a acceptable sharp line going across horizontally or vertically? Again is there a online picture that helps one to understand what a plane actually look like visually?

Wikepedia explains it pretty well http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scheimpflug_principle

    Thanks for the vocabulary lesson.

With Scheimflug, the planes are the two standards, that intersect. I hope you know what the standards are?

Horizontal - Figure 1 in the Wikipedia link shows a good example of this. I'm secretly jealous of you for taking a LF class, after having spent an afternoon with one. Even if you don't work with one of these cameras after you take the class, it will help your photography with whatever you do.

Thanks everyone, ok I have a good mental picture of how the planes look like.

"I hope you know what the standards are?"

Ha lol of course, front and rear standard, I didn’t Google it to answer this btw. I however used to be severely dyslexic, but now I got amazingly better.

Nah don’t be jealous, im sure you can still get into one, it’s never too late. I agree though it will help me in the technical side. Still trying to get used to the upside down left is right right is left image, but the ground glass is soooo beautiful it feels more real than real life! Really!

Wow, a question about Scheimpflug!!! I thought I would never see it being asked here.

My work just so happens to use a visual system where we have to correct for it. I never thought I would have seen it being discussed here. Then again, I've never shot LF!!!

    Re: Scheimpflug!

I don’t understand Wild Wassa, how was I rude? I did not intend for my thoughts to come off rudely. My thoughts are hard enough to understand themselves, when I try to convert them into words it can get even further from the true source that even I can’t make all the sense of my own questions and answers. To be honest, I had absolutely no clue I answered my own question. In fact, I still think I didn’t, because those diagrams are 2D illustrations, and I meant how would I visualize in my mind how the planes would look 3 dimensionally (maybe it’s not possible, just wanted some feedback). You may think I answered my own question but for "me" I have not. But I did say "Thanks everyone, ok I have a good mental picture of how the planes look like.". Yes 2d I got it, but 3d, noo.

But you see, words are only words until you put meaning behind it, those words mean different things to diffrent people, now imagine how that would go along with sentences that include many of them clumped together. Again being rude was far from my intentions, but how would you know that? That’s right you can’t because you are you and I am me, and you have no right claiming another human being wants this or that or in this case, "Why didn't you just say you were another super smart assed wantabee view camera handler, just touting for acceptance?". How would you know? You can’t believe 100% in me if I was to say "I am not just looking for acceptance", and you definitely can’t trust yourself 100% solely on the fact that you are not me. If that’s your first instinct Wild Wassa, you definitely should take all the considerations from the right, left up down, and all around before you state your opinions as facts.

Having even a billion hours certainly does not give you the right to insult me, all I wanted was to make a thread, and trying to help these confusing concepts stay in my head in a way I understand them, not how some text book tells me how to understand them. That’s cool if some like those explanations in the textbooks but I’m just seeing the others. Everyone thinks differently and I was simply trying to see in this case “read” what different explanations there were if any from other people for the same answer, that’s all. I didn’t realize it than when I started this thread, but now I do because of all of this.
I certainly was not just trying to get acceptance because quite frankly, I don’t need any, I like shooting alone, I like being alone, I have no need for other people’s approval for me to pass through a gate in something I am interested in. However, seeing how some people are so offensive (my pov, yours would be uhh, defensive heh) I sort of get a slight neggitvie feeling about LF photographers and photographers in general. Just one bad lemon I guess.

"Ask another question Sport. You have dismissed the wrong person here buddy boy."

I told you off? Really. If that’s your view, fine with me

Btw when I said "Thanks everyone, ok I have a good mental picture of how the planes look like.Ha lol of course, front and rear standard, I didn’t Google it to answer this btw."
The only reason I said it was because I thought you were trying to test me. However It may sound like a counterdiction, but I do understand how the planes look 2d like, and that will help me through out the class but I still wished I could picture it in 3d.

" I doubt that you would know what questions to even ask and by the way, it is 'Scheinflug' ... and Scheiner determined the applied mathematical standards that you will attempt to use to calculate your exposure factors. I hope you at least show his efforts some respect."

My god! Your right, I don’t know "all" the questions to even ask and how.. . . . .............. Why? ……….. Cause I’m only at my 4th day of photo 3 class! How the hell would I know everything, I just started out! Am I disrespecting it by not saying it right "Scheinflug", and not knowing that " Scheiner determined the applied mathematical standards that I will attempt to use to calculate my god damn exposure factors" ? Of course not! I’m just starting out, and if anyone is disrespecting another human being or there effort it’s YOU for picking on a special needs student that has nowhere near as much experience as you SIR. That’s like saying that you or I are disrespecting god, or the universe, and whatever the hell you believe in, just because you don’t know exactly how everything was CREATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am deeply saddened that all this happened. I hope we can put this all aside and call it truths? Let’s just say I wrote it wrong and you saw it wrong. It happens I guess. We were both wrong on both ends, Peace

Post a shot, I challenge you. I'm very happy to post images displaying large format techniques that you don't even know about ... YOU RUDE ASS..

    Warren.
Because I'd never heard of Schein/Scheim-pflug, I followed the Wikipedia link that Frog kindly provided: oh look, they've spelled it with an "m"! I'm sure the variance is found in many other places. What's the big deal?

BTW, I am offended by the unwarranted vitriol towards the original poster. Not very conducive to informative exchange at any level.

I prefer when everyone plays nice and pretends to be respectful.

Did they put something in the water or what???

This is the third thread TODAY that is far from what I appreciate about PR and have come to expect from PR posters. Like Cath, I prefer nice...
