number of shutter releases on a d70

Hi everyone, does anyone know how to get the number of shutter releases done on a nikon d70? I'm calling them shutter releases and not photos cause i assure you, a lot of them don't deserve to be called photos!
I'm pretty sure i'd seen this info somewhere but can't find it anymore.

I believe 50,000 is the number cited by Nikon, but that's just what I've heard on the grapevine on a few occasions. Of course, I've seen posts by people who've put 100,000 shots through theirs, and then posts by people who got 12,000 when theirs crapped out. I'm only at about 4,000, but I'm hoping mine is one that'll hit 100,000.

Call Nikon at 800-NIKON-US to be sure what the spec is that they publish. Some cameras (probably most) will make it past that number. With some of their cameras (don't know about this one specifically), service centers can see the number of activations but I don't think there's any other way to do it.

In any case, if it is 50,000 that amounts to about 1400 rolls of 36 exposure film - a lot of shots!

My first shot was DSC_0001.jpg, and my most recent shot was DSC_3788.jpg. If you have sequential numbering off (if that's even an option...I'm not sure...) you can see the info about shots taken in the EXIF info.

thanks guys for the info. Downbyfive, unfortunately I reformat my card after every download (I'd read somewhere it was a good thing to do) so my counter goes back to 0 every time but i'll check if sequential numbering is off just in case.

on my canon, it doesn't matter if I reformat my card. The image numbers just pick up where I left off. Otherwise, I'd have an awful lot of overwriting happening when I repeatedly downloaded the contents of one card (used over and over) into, say, a "Summer Vacation" folder.

The only time I've ever had a problem with duplicate numbers is if I use the same card in both my DRebel and my S500 (take it out of one camera, put it into the other). That seems to skrew up the numbering for some reason.

unfortunately, that is a problem i have, so basically every download goes in a different folder at the moment which is fine so far but it's going to have to change soon otherwise i'm gonna have to do a lot of number changing!!!

Your camera should automatically sequentially number the files starting at 1 and go upwards after each shot, not reset when you put a new card in even if you do reformat the card. Therefore if you take 10 shots a day for 100 days, you would be currently sitting at 100.jpg what ever it is called on your camera. It should be 1 - 10 each day, day 2 should be 11-20 and so on. Of course this won't happen if you have it turned off or set to reset each time. Don't have a Nikon, but this is how mine happens on my Canon 10D.

My Coolpix doesn't reset when I format the card (in camera). Check the menus, I think I had to change a setting from the default on it and my Fuji to get it to use sequential numbering.

Somehow I've reset the counter on my Fuji S2 a couple of times - not sure how. It had something to do with the way I downloaded RAW files but I never did figure out exactly what I did (not a big deal though). It displays a folder number and image number, like 101-0001 for the first shot, and I think I'm on folder 103. There's no way that I can find to reset it back to 101. It uses the same Nikon N80 platform and it's close to 10,000 shots, problem free. That's almost $4000 worth of slide film and processing...

so i had a look at my camera menu, and lo and behold i found a setting for sequencing file numbers which was off (default). I have to say, i hadn't even noticed it till now . So thanks everyone for your suggestions.
