    Titanv,

I sure hope the UK users here will help you out with more detail, but here's what i think you should keep in mind!

Starting your photography degree, are you sure they allow you to start off with a DSLR? (of course I know you might already have a film SLR)....

With that in mind, it really depends here, seeing as some (such as myself) would advise for the Canon models (i am the happy owner of a 20D) others will argue for the Nikon models and still someone might suggest others...

So basically, once you are pointed to the right direction in matters of shop, i suggest you try out the models, not in matters of pic quality, since you can find test results even here on the forum...but rather in matters of menu, and how comfortable you are with that! As well as how it holds in your hands!

Now i am unsure about prices but for your budget, i think it will be a pick between the EOS 400D and the Nikon D70 (i think....)....

    Hope this helps,
    Marc

Given that 300lbs is about 585 USD the only cameras at least in the USA that are close to your budget are the Canon Rebel DSLR, Nikon D40, Pentax K100D, or Olympus E-500. The Olympus is the smallest of the group. I like the Nikkor lenses myself but all are excellent cameras.

If you can find a Digital Rebel, I can say from having one that they are very nice!

Other than that, I've heard some very good things about the Pentax K100D.

I'll look for some UK Camera stores.

EDIT: Found an E-300 with a lens for 250 Pounds.

    Found an E-300 with a lens for 250 Pounds(Used)

Canon Digital Rebel with Quantray 19-35 F3.5-4.5 basically Glued on. :P

Despite being box-shifters, I have used Jessops just for their price match to web sellers
They may not have a clue, but they're local and you can take it back easily to complain !

Do you already have Canon EF lenses?
If not then you're on a very low budget.
