Nikon N75 vs. the Canon Rebel Ti

I'm a beginner photographer and I want to make sure I start with a very good mid range 35mm SLR. I personally, money wise and based on other reviews, have narrowed it down to these two: the Nikon N75 and the Canon Rebel Ti. I would enjoy to hear what you would choose and why. This would aid me very much in making a knowledgable decision in the future thank you.

When I faceed theis choice, I went with Canon for one reason: image stabiliztion in lenses I could actually afford. Nikon's VR system is used, I believe, only on their expensive pro lenses. IMHO, IS is a better innovation than autofocus!

Otherwise, handle each camera and see which one you like best. Neither is really better than the other.

if you got the cash perhaps the elan 7n is a far better choice.

I chose the Rebel Ti because I saw it first, held it first, and fell in love with it. Purchased it immediately with no further research.

I still love it. Have upgraded to the Digital Rebel and have bought new lenses that fit both.

So I guess I just grew with it and got accustomed to its controls. Had I bought the Nikon instead, who knows what I'd be saying? But I love the pictures I got with my Ti. My first roll blew me away. Especially the way its sports mode captured my son on a water slide, freezing him in place while allowing movement of the water around him. With that shot, I was completely in love.

the nikon has a spot meter unless im mistaken, which the canon lacks. this may or may not matter to you, but i figure its probably a good thing to have if you decide you want one.

I might sound like an idiot but explaining what a spot meter is would great be appreciated im just getting into the whole photography words and vocab so if you could explain that or anyone else that would be nice thanks

Spot Meter:
A light meter, which takes its reading at an angle of 1 to 8 degrees. Used for the Zone System or to determine the reflective values of specific elements in a scene.

FWIW, many "partial" meters are actually within this range.

Canon 20D meter has a centre spot mode (they call it partial metering) but I'm not sure it's narrow enough to call spot mode.

I chose the rebel ti 2 years ago when I started photo., and quickly learned that i should have should have spent the extra 100 dollars for the Elan7. Mirror lockup(I do alot of macro now) and 1/4000 for action, really quiet and eyefocus capable, things that the Ti does not have. I started kicking myself about a month after getting the Ti. Don't get me wrong, it is a great little camera, and has served me well. I have shot probably 300 rolls of neg and slide film on it and does a great job, exposures well, but turned out to be not what i wanted.

How does mirrow lockup help with macro? If the mirror is locked up, how is the expsure time controlled?

Exposure time is controlled by the shutter, not the mirror. MLU locks the mirror up so it won't shake the camera when it flips up.
