Nikon D70 & non-Nikon flashes

Hi:
I am new to this site and this is my first posting so it's quite possible that this issue has already been dealt with.
I would like to know if I can use my Metz CT-4 or my Sunpak 544 flash on my recently purchased Nikon D70.
I understand that some older flashes may be too powerful for digital cameras and that a safe solution is to purchase a safe-sync adapter.
But is there anybody out there who has used a Metz 45CT-4 or a Sunpak 544 flash on a digital camera (specifically a Nikon D70) while using an ordinary hot shoe?

Welcome to the board.

I think it will work if you have an "auto" mode on the flash (i.e. the flash has it's own sensor). Nikon has produced a warning that some 3rd party flashes have too high of a trigger warning for the D70. Read your D70 manual for further info. Otherwise if your D70 triggers your flash, you are good to go. You will, however miss out on the i-ttl (if your exisiting flash is not compatible with Nikon i-ttl).
