Multiple Strobe Flash Say What?

I know this might sound like a dumb question but could someone please explain how you get multiple images on one shot. Let me explain... I've seen it many times in skating and biking magazines where a subject is doing a trick at night and the shot captured 6 or 7 sequenced ghost images of the subject. And I'm not talking about when they Photoshop the subject from multiple shots onto one frame. I read something about "strobe flashes" but all I know of strobes are what I've used in the studio and they only go off once before they have to recharge. So if someone could please explain this to me that would be great! Thanks -Justin

This effect is called stroboscopic flash and is pretty easy to do. First you need to put your camera on a tripod and set the shutter to bulb. When you're ready to take the picture hold the shutter open with a cable release and fire your flash as many times as you'd like. Each flash creates a "ghost" image. Some top of the line flashes have this as a built in feature but if your flash doesn't just hold your flash in your free hand and manually fire your flash if it has a button that lets you do so. It also might be a good idea to get a flash meter to determine the proper f stop to use so you don't overexpose your subject with the flash. Hope this helps.
