Manfrotto Tripod Advice Please.

I need a new tripod and I've been looking at the 055XPROB from Manfrotto with the 488CR2 head.
right now I have cheap wal-mart one just a tad bit too flimsy for my tastes, And I got it for my Sony cybershot.
My Canon with a 2x doubler and the 70-300 mm lens with hood weighs around 3.05 pounds.
Is there any problems of going over kill on the size of a tripod.
I know I could go with the 190XPROB and the 486CR2 head, If and when I get the money I was thinking about upgrading to the Canon 50D. or bigger later on down the line.

How many of you use the 055XPROB legs?

Really, the only problems associated with going overkill on a tripod are 1) the impact on your wallet, and 2) your willingness to carry the thing around with you to use it.

The second reason should not be casually dismissed. It's a significant issue in terms of whether you actually end up getting the benefits that you bought the tripod for.

I do understand that it weighs roughly 7 pounds with the head.
My bag loaded weighs roughly 20 pounds.

I do understand your point about getting the benefits from it, And I think I will be able to, The type of surfaces I shoot on is not always smoth and even.
I will try to find a photo of me taken by another.

I have the original 190 tripod (not the new improved version).
I find it's a bit heavy, and is rated for less weight than the 486RC2 head.
I want something stronger for my 1D/300mm and yet lighter to carry

I have the 488RC2 head, it's quite a bit heavier than the 486, but strong enough for the 300mm/1D combination. But it makes the 190 legs the weak point of the support.

I have pretty much this same combo. I have the 3021BPro legs, and the 488RC2 yead. I think my legs have been replaced by the model that you are looking at. I do think it's a pretty good combo. It can be a bit heavy to carry on long hikes, but manageable. One of the big improvements over the tripod you are using now is the independent leg movements. You will love not having all of your legs tied to the center column.

icicle, I recently bought the 190CXPRO3 and the 468MGRC0 ball head. My 5D and the 100-400 do really well with it. HTH.

Tripods are a lot like lenses. 1 usually is not enough. I own 4. For studio stuff I have an old Manfrotto 3058( bought used in good condition). My most used is a set of 3021B legs with a RRS BH55 on the top. If I am using big glass then I usually pull out the Gitzo GT5541LS with a Wimberley II head on it. For travel I have a Gitzo GT2530.

What what you have now the 190XBPro and 486 sound like a good combination for your needs. As you needs change you may want to look at something different to meet those needs. Keep in mid however, if you spend you money wisely at this point you should end up with a tripod that will give you years of service and not grief.

You never can have too much tripod..... But I would not carry the Majestic Tripod I picked up used... but it was made for large view cameras not a DSLR. My tripod is a old (1999) Manfrotto with a 3029 Bogen head. It has seen cameras from the Olympus C-3030 to Graflex View I (a 4 by 5 film camera) with out any problems.

I did a little better compairision between the 190XPROB and the 055XPROB and with the same head 488RC2
190 weighs 4 pounds add another 1.5 pounds= 5.5 pounds
055 weighs 5 pounds add another 1.5 pounds= 6.5 pounds
So with that said I might just get the bigger one, and I have no qualms coing with a slightly heavier legs. Should last me the rest of my life.

I just carried my 190Xpro up Beacon Hill in the Uk which is quite a steep climb and I promise you weight is everything under those conditions.

I have a 5D and a 24-70L and the 100-400L and the tripod works with these easily I think I have the 486 ball head.

Work out how far you want to carry the tripod first them buy one light enough otherwise you will regret it.

I currently have the Silk 700DX Pro with the 486RC2 head. I had my XTi and 100-400 lens connected with no problems. I do have to add that the legs have some weight to them but I am a big guy and it doesn't bother me to much. I am thinking about getting a mono-pod in the near future.

As mentioned you will love the fact that each leg is independent.
