    Exclamation Mack Extended Warranty??

Mack warranties are available for photo and video equipment through many trusted online vendors. Does anyone have experience with them?

I've purchased a warranty for my Canon A2 (never used it), Canon G2 (used it due battery problem), and Canon DREBEL (used it when the hotshoe broke).

What is your opinion on buying warrantees? There are consumer advocates that say it is not worth buying extended warrantees. It's mostly 100% profit for stores. I should know. I use to work for an electronics store and selling warranty pads the pay check well.

FYI....you can revoke your warranty and get the prorated difference back sometimes. It's a hassle but it's in the fine print. I once revoked the extended warranty on a car and they paid me back the remaining balance. You usually have to write the company to make the request. Read your fine print.

So what's your opinion on extended warrantees?

    Re: Mack Extended Warranty??

Generally I don't buy them. I have a couple of times, for non-photo related stuff and never needed them. One electronics seller gave an extra year warranty free with purchase, but the thing went belly up about a month past that (just my luck).

It is tempting with the high price of repairs on digital cameras, but I've been lucky. My Fuji DSLR had a sensor go out well past the warranty but they still replaced it for free. A repair bill for that one may have changed my thinking...

It all depends on the price of the item, and the original warranty. I once purchase a DVD player and the labor on replacing the free part was more than what I paid for the player new. I will read the warranty before buying. On my Epson C-80 printer they replaced the printer twice under the extended warranty. On some things an extended/replacement warranty is good like PDAs and MP3 players, as long as the price of the extended warranty is less than one quarter of the new price.

I never purchase extended warranty because such warranty always only warranty the period that such equipment still in good shape (believe or not, the manufacturer does have some kind of confident otherwise they will not offer extended warranty).

The other benefit to some warrantees is the replacement clause. If for example the damage can not be fixed then they will give you store credit in case the model is no longer available. I know Best Buy will make a replacement if the unit needs to be serviced more than twice for the same problem.

I recently bought a projection TV. The I bought the warranty since the bulb is 'suppose' to go out within the a couple of years. It's just not meant to last forever like other TVs. So the warranty cost a little more than the bulb so I decided to buy it. They will also come to the house to check the condition of the TV (preventative maintenance?) but I need to read up on that part.
