Hot Pixel - Is This Normal?

I just got a new Canon 450D and there's a noticeable hot pixel that appears in many shots in the same place. It's mostly in shots with exposure times over a couple of seconds, but it's also visible in fast shutter shots taken at high ISO. Is this normal? Do I just deal with it? Or, should I return the camera and try another one?

1st example shot is a 100% crop and the second is the full shot downsized, both JPEGs straight from the camera. If you look close, you can see it in the top right corner of the full frame shot.

    Thanks,
    Paul

Honestly, I'm not too sure - only experience with one brand-new DSLR. That camera (Fuji S2, bought my D200 used) had some hot pixels show up eventually - at least a year later, I'd guess. Long shutter speeds will bring them out. I just use the clone tool to quickly take care of them.

If the camera is brand new, to the point that you could exchange it - assuming you bought it locally - you might try to do that. Personally I wouldn't bother sending it in for service, as you would be without it for a couple/few weeks.

Re: Hot Pixel - Is This Normal?

Thanks for the reply, Steve. I was a little upset when I posted this last night, but I've had a chance to do some research since then, and it sounds like this is fairly typical. I just don't remember seeing anything like it on my D70s, but then I didn't really use it like that, so who knows. I think I run the chance of getting another one that's just like it or worse if I return it, so I guess I'll just clone it out when necessary. It's to bad I can't program the raw converter to take it out for me.

I don't really know anything about Nikons, but a Canon will usually fix the problem when you use the cleaning function. Long exposures will usually show a stuck pixel.

Maybe a Dust Reference (or whatever they call it) image would do it, not sure on that. Otherwise use the quick and handy Auto Retouch Brush in Capture NX2.

Oh wait - you have a Canon now...

I just used the healing brush in Photoshop with my Fuji, just as I would for dust spots on the sensor. It really never bothered me because there would maybe be three or four I'd get on a long exposure. Compare that five second repair to sending it in to Fuji and being without the camera for maybe up to a month (but hopefully less) and it was an easy choice to live with it.
