Unhappy Help! what happened to this image?

This photo was taken a few weeks ago and I left it on my card since there were only a few images there. When I viewed the image initially it was fine - sharp, good color. You can see the line at the top of the image to get a (small) idea of what the original looked like.

Yesterday I used the card again and when I put the CF card in the reader, something had happened to this image. All the other images are fine. I removed the card from the reader and tried again a few times, but it didn't go back to the original sharp image.

Interesting point - when the thumbnail is viewed on Elements2 - it looks fine. It's not until I "select" the image that it changes. Although on Smugmug, even the thumbnail looks like this.

Could someone explain how this happened? And - is there a way to "fix" it or get it back to the original?

    Thanks.

    Liz ...
I had this happen to a whole disc when I was using a Sony FD Mavica. I gave the damaged disc to my nephew-in-law (a computer geek). He was able to restore about 90% of the disc.

I asked him what happened ... he said he didn't know but I should be satisfied that he salvaged the shots he did.

Hopefully, you will get a better answer.

    Good luck.

I guess I won't use this CF card for now. I used it all day yesterday. All the other images on the card are fine even the ones I shot at the same time as the above photo.

Probably a stupid question, but what kind of disc were you referring to?

I've had images not show up on the camera when I put the card in, but showed up on the pc monitor from the card reader. I just transferred those to the external HD and reformatted the card.

ETA: I moved all the images to the external HD. Am I safe using the card after I reformat it? Or is the card defective?

    Liz-
It sounds like the image was corrupted and the thumbnail wasn't. The biggest problem I've had with corrupted images is from bad card readers. But occasionally, for whatever mysterious reason, it happens. I wouldn't worry about the card unless it becomes a consistent problem. Reformat the card and it should be fine.

    Liz ...
The Sony Mavica used a 3.5 inch "floppy disc" (like the "old time" computers). It also would accept a memory stick. I used the floppies as they were quick to change, cheap, plentiful and compatable with any computer that had a floppy drive. It probably was the computer I first used to view the images that corrupted the whole disc.
