    Help picking out digital SLR...

    Hi all,

I'm the sports editor for my college paper and in need of advice.

The staff is looking into getting the sports department our own camera so we don't have to fiddle around with the less powerful ones the news room uses.

We are able to pull some money out of the budget along with money we have recieved from benefactors, alumni, and local companies. We are in the $700-$900 range.

We need a camera that will be easy to use since we are far away from being what you would consider "professionals." And we need one that will give us high enough quality to print in a paper. Most photos will be grayscaled in Photoshop, BTW.

Any help would be great. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how often I'll be back at this site so it would be AWESOME if you could send me an e-mail to bcongelio@wlsc.edu with any advice and/or links to some cameras. Thanks in advance!

    Brad C.

Tell you what - we'll post free advice here for you and others to see. That's kind of how it works around here.

Does your budget have to include lenses, memory cards, software or anything else or can you spend that full amount on a camera body? In that price range for a fast sports camera, the best choice might be something used. If you're using an existing lens system it makes sense, of course, to use whatever brand of camera is compatible with those lenses. If it's Nikon, maybe a D1H is a good one to look for.
