    Question Help/input on D100, D70, D70s

I have started saving for a DSLR and have narrowed it down to three. I have chosen to go with Nikon cause I have a Nikon point and shoot digital and a Nikon N75 35mm SLR so I am somewhat fimilar with their menus. I have done some reasearch and have found the there isn't much difference between the D70 and D70s. Other than a larger screen and some menu opitions they are the same from what I can tell. My main question is the D100 worth the extra $100 over the D70? Looking in the B&H catalog my friend gave me I don't see what I'm getting extra with the D100 other than the body looks a little different. Looking back, those of you with the D70, wish you saved up the extra $100 and got the D100? Those of you with the D100 wish you could of saved the $100 and gone with the D70? This camera is going to be used from taking pics at the race track to landscapes and probably a little of everything inbetween.

The D100 has been out for a few years and is due for replacement. Not that there's necessarily anything wrong with it, but a three-year (about?) old model is pretty ancient by DSLR standards. Nobody knows when the D100 replacement will happen until it's officially announced, but maybe this fall - again, a guess. The D100 will keep coming down in price, just like other DSLR's (originally it was over $2000).

The D70s looks like mostly a firmware update other than the larger (better?) LCD screen. You could buy a close-out D70 and download the new firmware from Nikon and you'd almost have a D70s for less money.

Thanks for the info. I've come across another body to throw into the mix. I've seen some used D1's for about half of a new D70. How does the D1 compair to the D70?

I'd pass on a D1 unless you need something that big and heavy more than good image quality. The D1 was pretty amazing in it's day (a whole six or seven years ago!!) but it's ancient compared to the D70. The AF might be better because it's built on an F100/F5 body as well as how much abuse it can handle. But image quality has made huge leaps since this camera - you'll spend some time in Photoshop getting good images...

Another possibility to consider if you do need something this heavy duty would be a D1X or D1H which were the second generation that replaced the D1. Once again I'd choose newer over anything else. D2H's have the newest features but get mixed reviews. Some people love them, some people hate them but they all seem to say that they're not great at high ISO's. Nikon blew them out recently for $2k because of the new D2Hs (and also D2X) so you might find some bargains on used D2H bodies pretty soon too (D2X is in pretty scarce supply as of now).

Personally, I'm going to wait it out to see what happens!

    Hello
I went through the same situation a few months ago and had to stick with Nikon cause of all of the lens I have for Nikon..I posed the same question to this formu and got the best advice i could have....I went with the Fujifilm S3 DSLR. It cost about $2300 and was out of my price range but now that I have it....WOW!!!!!
Read the reviews and look around and you might find that for you this is a good choice. yes, it costs 2,5 times the D70 but it is worth it.

    Anyway...my 2 cents worth.

I guess I didn't even think about the S2 that I shoot with either, since the S3 was introduced there's some bargains out there on it. Not a bad option, but it is a few years old. The D70 is hard to beat for the money.
