One thing to consider that you may not have already is the lenses these cameras require. The D-40 & D-60 may be less expensive than the D-80 but they also require AF-S lenses if auto focus is important to you. AF-S seem to be substantially more expensive than their AF/D and AF/G counterparts which will only auto focus on the D-80 frame (out of the choices you listed) and the range of available lenses in the AF-S line is not as substantial as the other auto focus lines. The D-80 will also work well with older film auto focus lenses as well, which you may find deals on at used equipment dealers and Ebay.

Depends on whether you want your photograhy to grow.
Pesonally, I'd get a D80 because I want my photography to be all I can afford it to be.
Does it take better pics than a d40 or d60? Depends on who is holding it and whether they can make the best out of the extra features.
If you're going to put your camera on auto or shutter/aperture priority and shoot happily away....get the d40.
    Keep Shooting!

    As for kenrockwell

    http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/recommended-cameras.htm

    Forget Resolution

Resolution, expressed in megapixels, is no longer relevant. Forget it when comparing cameras.

As of 2008, resolution is nothing more than a sales pitch to get you to pay more. I've made great-looking 12x18" (30x50cm) prints from a three megapixel camera, and fantastic 20x30" (50x75cm) prints from a 6 MP camera.

I usually shoot my higher-resolution cameras turned back down to 6MP anyway!

Even the very cheapest cameras here have at least 6MP, so ignore pixels.

    D40 over d60 and d80

Sure, I own more expensive cameras, but whenever I grab a camera for my own personal vacations or family photos, it's almost always my remarkable and super lightweight Nikon D40. There isn't anything reasonable I can't do with Nikon's least expensive D40. There is no real reason to pay more for a Nikon D60 or D80. Save your money for more important things, like another lens or flash, or just pocket the difference and enjoy a vacation.

For $499 or less, complete with an exceptionally good 18-55mm lens, it's a no-brainer. (I paid $600 for my D40 in 2006 and still love it.)

I wouldn't bother with the more expensive Nikons unless you really want to spend money, or will be using it all day, every day, or just have to have a bigger screen on the back. Don't worry about durability: I've made 25,000 shots on my D40 and it still looks and works like new.

I only use my more expensive cameras when I'm shooting all day. If I'm spending more time carrying it than using it, I grab my Nikon D40.

I shoot with a D80,love it.The D80 is a thinking mans camera,is considered somewhat outdated. The D40, D60 are both highly regarded as entry level DSLR's.Yet,the D60 does everything the D80 can do with more features, user friendly menus.
As soon as it stops raining I'll be out with my newest toy...D90.

    Point # 1 resolution, I agree.

Point # 2 cost, as Frog stated it depends on how you use it.

If you are going to be happy either just using the kit lens, or don't mind paying A LOT more for fully functional extra lenses, or don't mind simply focusing manually - then I agree.

If you think you may invest in extra lenses in the future, and auto focus is important to you, then I do not agree. Example, a 50mm prime lens for the D-80 is $109.00, the comparable lens for the D-40 is $439.00. Remember that if you stick with it, you are buying a SYSTEM, not just a camera, so you really need to look at the whole system, even if you're not planning to buy all of it right now.

Go with the D80, it'll give you room to grow and will fit lots of really cool lenses that the other won't fit. It's a couple years back in technology, but it's a great camera. I think I shot mine for year in Auto or aperture priority when the photo bug hit me and I invested in some good glass and really learned how to use it.

Now I'm shopping D3 vs D700 to get to the next level.

If you plain on purchasing more lenses, the D80 will AF more older lenses than either the D40 or D60 series. The older AF can be found use or new many times at great savings which may be more than the cost difference between the camera.

But if you need a light weight camera then the D40 or D60 is the winner.
