Smile gathering more pro info before going to Tibet(~~~Expedition-china~~~)For Sharing.....

:aureola: Hi respectable amateurs of photography and experts:
As I’m a amateurs of photography plan to go to Tibet with some friends, It’s time to think about what to bring…..a set of photographic bags with Camera and accessories is fixed(not heavy, with compressed oxygen, lenses, compressed bisket ,tent, shoes, wadded jacket, medicine for constipation~~ diarrhea etc….)Some Photographer friends said that it’s necessary to set apart 13%-15% investment for Tripod fr the total photographic equipment expenditure,,,I’m thinking about what kind of Tripod I should bring this time.(I’ve to control the weight of my belonging)----there’re many brands in Chn, Macau and HK, the imported brands like Manfrotto,Triopo,Velbon.Giotto,;local brands hv weifen, bailuo,Victory(Expedition)~I like the name of expedition victory, hehe,….some tripod are troublesome and unreliable,,I don’t want a heavy and expensive one as I spent a lot on Camera and lenses already,,to tell u the trueth, some Int’l famous brand tripods are different between the one made-in –Chn and the one originated fr their home market, such as the Tripod Velbon made-in –Chn is quite different fr the one made-in –Japan(the Chn Velbon they replace the medal sparepart as much as they can by plastic sparepart.so ,perhaps some made-in –Chn tripods with good quality is more compatative. As the tripod is not hi-tech prod like camera, the tripod is finished by hand made combination privor to some good quality materials…I still remember the old tripod my uncle(a photographer) using(he brought that tripod with him to Mongolia and still has good function at present, the brand name is Victory(Expedition)1PBO~~quite impressive and nice name, haha,,that’ s a local brand, and my uncle is the friend of the photographer boss of the manufacturer…

Anyway ,I do want to share(pro comment, opinion, suggestion, fotos, skill….) and get more valuable info fr experts and more photographers.

Never been to a place like that, but I've never heard that your tripod should cost any certain percentage of how much you spent on the rest of your gear. Really doesn't make sense to me... Manfrotto is a well-respected name, at least the products sold in the US. It's not a function of how much the tripod costs, but is it sturdy enough for your gear, high enough to comfortably use, light enough to carry, etc.

anyway, thank you for your comment very much,,,,yeah, what u said really make sense,,,..there're too many choices ,I prefer a carbon fiber's---- some even has less weight than a ballhead ! ,,I 'm think if i can lose some weight fr the ballhead,,,,a plastic one ??gonna compare....
To be continued..I'm going to visit the International Imaging and Photographic Equipment Expo in Shanghai (fr 26/9--30/9)
That'd be great if some of our Photographers can meet there........

I have been to Nepal, which is similar. The key is to keep the weight and bulk down to a minimum. The quality of light at altitude is pretty good, so I would wonder if a tripod is really necessary .. you can always use a small bag of rice to balance the camera on a rock if you need to. Also, it gets very cold at night at altitude, but warm during the day .. so take spare batteries and keep them wrapped in socks. The other thing I would definitely bring is a polariser.

    Cheers

we'd better give directly to the principals as they know who is needy ,in this way we can avoid chaos as well, The kindhearted behavior sometime would cos chaos if we don't do it in a right way .....

I have been to tibet and let me tell you, depending on if you are in a village or on rocky terrain you will in fact need a good and light tripod. I used the Gitzo Basalt 58.3" with a max load of 12.1 lbs. It is extremely light (feels like two pounds) and really sturdy. Then, get a good ball head, don't even bother with a pan head as they are unsuitable for shooting on an incline for the most part. I got the Acra-Swiss Monoball DP and it is a thing of beauty. You will need a quick release plate though so calculate your budget accordingly. Should you get the Velbon, a great tripod brand by the way, make sure you get a good ballhead, because that is ultimately what gives you the stable picture.

Re: gathering more pro info before going to Tibet(~~~Expedition-china~~~)For Sharing.....

Thank you so much for the valuable Tripod advice ,We do think tripod is indispensable as u said, in China there're many many tripod brands but few are up to the standard of professinal photography,I'm familiar the technician of a tripod manufacturing big factory(the factory's tripod and panhead and aluminium easel sells pretty good both domestic and oversea,),I know every manufacturing process & every procedure in production, a good tripod does depend on man-made combination details,of course it based on the precise mould design and machine tool cutting etc.spare parts in advanced..I believe none of the tripod factories make everything by themselves(polishing ,dieing,plastic,spray-painting,the compass and the gradienter,..etc.),,,there're some good factories in china as well, some are joint-ventures,some are domestic-own,,I do agree Gitzo Basalt &Acra-Swiss Monoball DP are thing of beauty.,,,yeah ,the good tripod and good ballhead can be very helpful for nice photo making.,,---by the way there's Int'l Imaging & Photographic equipment Expo In Shanghai fr 26/9--29/9,I'd like to see as I'll be there at that time(the Traditional Mid-autumn moon-cake days)

It's definitely my pleasure to receive so many advice fr the photographers all over the world.Tks again, our photographic group would go Tibet in this last season of 2007,do looking forward to take some good fotos and share with all respectable amateurs of photography and experts all over the world...

Wow... that's a really neat minipod! I wish I had that thing when I went hiking and didn't want to carry the tripod. Do you know if there is an english translation?

    Hi Mr fx101:
the name of it is the translation fr Mercury, perhaps doesn't hv English name yet,,,,It has various functions and advantage, probably it would have great potential in near future,I know the price of it and also know the approximate cost of it,I believe it'd hv great market....with some improvement --would even better,To be continued.
