    Question film question

    Hi All,
It's been getting VERY hot and humide where I live and I was wondering about my film; will it affect it at all? Like yesterday, I was taking outdoor photos all day and it was very hot; will anything happen to my film (either in my camera or in my bag) if it's really hot and humide outside?

Or I keep my camera, extra film inside my camera bag in my room and obviously due to the heat, I was wondering if that was the best place to keep it?
thanks for any advice you can give me.

I'd say that as long as you're relatively comfortable, your film is too. Don't leave it in the car (including trunk, obviously) on a hot day. There are plenty of shots that have been taken on film in the desert on long trips over the years, and the shots are great (National Geographic, etc). I wouldn't worry too much about it, but do what you can.

One thing, if you do have to leave it in the car get a cooler. You can get a big one to put your whole camera bag in too if there's a need for it. Put a couple/few bottles of cold water in the cooler and you should be fine for awhile - plus a cooler doesn't look as attractive to theives as a camera bag!

I had never thought of using a cooler, what a great idea!

    Good question...

For long term storage the refrigerator is best. For short-term use, the inside of your photobag will provide good protection. Although having a dry cooler will prevent radical temperature changes.

Treat film like wine, and you'll do fine. Anotherview's advice is good.

Humidity won't do anything to the film as long as it's unopened in the plastic containers. If you have opened the container in a humid place then you have let water vapour into the container which is OK as long as you don't take it into a very cold place because then the water vapour might turn to water and if you get water drops on your film then you're really in trouble.

I used to leave film in the trunk of my car. At night I would empty the trunk so it got really cool. In the morning I would fill the trunk, preferably with thick sleeping bags and blankets so there is no way that air can circulate. Then I would bury the film right in the heart of the sleeping bag. The sleeping bag acts as isolation keeping heat out with my film cool in the middle.

Yeah I have been wondering the same thing, I live in Texas,Extreme Heat,
its been over 100 degrees several days in a row, I'm about to go on a short trip for a
couple of days, I may try the cooler idea , I guess your not suppose to put ice in there with
it, sorry this heat has made me kind of dumb.....it also has kept me inside which is not
good for my photography, since 99 % percent of my pics are of buildings & scenery........
maybe some day it will cool off

I'd be concerned about it getting too cold at that point. The problem is that once you pull something cold out of the cooler, it will get wet from condensation. Not a problem with the bottle of water but it is a problem with camera gear and also film (once you pull it out of the water tight plastic canister. Just keep it cool and you'll be OK. If you're out for the day, just carry your film with you rather than leaving it in the car and you'll be fine as well.

    Re: film question

No I was just joking about the ice , Most of the time I put the whole
camera bag in the trunk, if its fairly hot at least its not in the sun. I have a Lincoln Town Car with the body hiding trunk (just kidding about that too) the temperature seems to be a little lower in there than in there car where the sun is shining, most of the time I'm not out a long time in the heat...........
