I hope I've understood this correctly because it's really simple. You just put your SD card in a card reader connected to your computer, connect your external hard drive to the computer and drag and drop between the two. For the PC both the SD card and the external drive are removable hard disks and you can do pretty much anything with them.

Last Christmas I used my 4GB Compact Flash card to transfer my sisters personal files from her old computer to the new one.

It is indeed this simple, but keep in mind, that if your purpose is to view the photos in your camera, you may have to duplicate the folder structure and file naming conventions the camera uses. I have also found that if I edit a photo with some programs, the picture is no longer viewable in my Canon S3 IS. But if you just wish to use the SD card as a "transport" from one place to another, it's a cinch...
