    Faltbed scanner vs. Copystand setup

    Hello,

I am an illustrator seeking advice on transitioning from a flatbed scanner to a copystand, digital camera & lighting setup as a means of capturing my illustrations and uploading them directly into my computer.

I'm wondering if a copystand setup will work better than a flatbed scanner? And if so, what type of equiptment ($2500 to $3000 budget) would you recommend? And if not, I would be interested to learn whatever other suggestions you might have.

    Advance thanks,

    WF

I don't have experience with this type of work, but it seems like a lot more work. There are lots of variables although once it's set up right it shouldn't be too bad. Also, there's a lot more "stuff" involved.

What is it that you need from a copy stand that you're not getting with a flatbed?

My main concern with Flatbed scanners is that they can only replicate smooth surfaces thus limiting the types of papers/techniques one can employ. I was thinking that with a copystand setup I would have more options with this regard.

Re: Faltbed scanner vs. Copystand setup

What is the size of the biggest thing you expect to copy?
I don't know what the biggest scanner is, but I'd care to say if you are going to be copying anything bigger than 11x14, I'd say you probably want a copystand.
If you are going to be doing anything smaller than that, I'd say a scanner.
    Just my thoughts..

Flatbed scanners have very limited depth of field unlike a camera, but the lighting and many other aspects will get tricky. I see you're in Chicago - might want to take a trip to Calumet Photo on Cherry St. to see what they've got.
