    Exposure Metering Default?

I have an Elan IIE SLR. I am confused about the exposure metering modes and the manual is not very clear on them--neither is the Magic Lantern Guide. There are 3 choices - 1) a blank rectangle, 2) a set of brackets, and 3) a set of brackets with a dot in the middle in the back. I don't know which one is which. The manual implies that the blank rectangle is spot metering, but that makes no sense to me. I would think that the brackets with the dot in the middle would be spot metering and the blank rectangle would be evaluative.

Either the symbols are poorly conceived or the manual is wrong. Very confusing.

I would appreciate help on this. Thanks a lot.

My guess is, respectively, averaging, center-weighted, and evaluative.

    Cool Re: Exposure Metering Default?

Proud Elan IIe owner here. Don't have my manual handy, but suspect yours has a printing error.

The Canon meter symbol convention is:

[ ] "Plain" rectangle is "plain" old centerweighted.
[ ( ) ] With center brackets is Partial metering: ~9% at the center (CF 8 = 0), or at the active focus sensor (CF 8 = 1).
[ * ] If the Elan had it, a black dot in the rectangle is Spot metering.
[ (*) ] The last with both brackets and center dot is Evaluative.
