Are the Rebel 2000 and the EOS 500 the same slr camera?

The EOS500 was known as the Rebel XS in the American market (This camera was introduced in Spetember 1993)

and the Rebel 2000 was known in Europe as the EOS300 (this camera was introduced in April 1999)
