    Canon is Great!

My good ol' Canon S400, many years old, died about a week ago with a CF card reading error. Nothing I did could fix the problem. The camera shop wanted a couple hundred dollars to get it repaired so I started looking for a replacement.

But wait! I am always telling people to contact the manufacturer with camera problems. OK, I decided to follow my own advice and sent an email to Canon service. Lo and behold, Canon is going to repair the camera for FREE even though it is years out of warranty!

You won't always get great results like this but it certainly can't hurt to try. The camera will be sent out to Canon Monday and before I know it my wonderful S400 will be back as good as new.

I'm just curious, but what did you say to them in your letter? Did you ask nicely for advice on how you can get it fixed, or did you take a stern tone and tell them they had unacceptable quality?

It's good to know they stand by their products.

That's great! Credit where credit is due. I'm curious too about your approach in this situation.

Wow! That's certainly good news. Glad you followed your own advice.

I live about 45 minutes from Canon-Jamesburg, NJ. I've always had excellent service. When you go there in person, they will clean your sensor as a courtesy (no charge) while you wait - takes 30-60 minutes.

Show us some of your pictures when you get it back.

Hi and welcome. Chances are that few people will see your question. Try posting a new thread with this question either here or probably better yet, in the Sports Forum.

I was very friendly, explained what had happened clearly and distinctly. I was hoping for a discounted repair fee and, instead, got the biggest discount of all.

In all disputes, I start out friendly and switch to stern and angry only when warranted (as with Verizon residential phone service!). As my camera was way out of warranty, I wouldn't have gotten mad at Canon no matter what they said or did.
