Canon extender EF 1.4 II or 2.0 II

Just wondering what peoples thoughts of extenders were. I have a 70 - 200 f/2.8 IS and am thinking about getting an extender for the World GP at Laguna Seca in July... I would like to get closer than a 200 will get to the action. On Canon's website it talked about the 2.0 working with the IS but didn't say anything like that for the 1.4.

    Thanks for the help.

    BTW I am using a 10D.

Re: Canon extender EF 1.4 II or 2.0 II

I'm using the 2x because I wanted the maximum.
Still, 400mm (from my 70-200) is not enough.
And the 2 stops I lose put me right on the limit of the AF.

So it's time to get the credit card out and look for a long prime

The 2x definitely works, but there is definitely some image degradation. I posted a side by side comparison a while back of the 70-200 f2.8L IS at 400mm with the EF 2x TC II versus the 400mm f5.6L. On the plus side, it's a lot easier to carry the 70-200 and a couple of extenders in place of a 400mm lens plus the 70-200. Here's the link to the comparison if you're interested. 400mm f5.6L vs 70-200 f2.8L+2x TC tests

I'm definitely leaning towards a 400mm prime after that posting, I remember looking at it first time you posted and seeing £££ signs dancing in front of my eyes considering the F2.8 lenses

However, near axis with the crop factor of a 20D the image quality may be better than in that example of yours with the larger sensor in the 1D. I know it's 1.6 vs 1.3 but it may affect edge sharpness a bit.
