Canon EF 70-200mm 1:4 L IS USM Help

This lens has a Stabilizer Mode button where you can select position One or position Two. What is this for?? It seems like I read something somewhere about one is best for panning, but I'm not sure.

It also has a button to select either 1.2m to infinity OR 3m to infinity. When and why do you use what??

Any other instruction/tips with regard to this lens would be most appreciated.

    Thanks.

Re: Canon EF 70-200mm 1:4 L IS USM Help

IS - Mode 2 is for panning. It turns off the horizontal stabilization (leaving vertical correction on) which makes it easier to follow subjects and get the panning blur at moderate shutter speeds. Mode 1 is normal IS (stabilized in all directions).

I find the focus switch is most usable whe shooting behind a fence. It keeps the lens from trying to focus on the fence (assuming you're within 10ft of the fence). Other than that, it's supposed to improve focus speed because it dramatically shortens the range of travel for the focus. If I won't be shooting anything close, I turn it to the 3m setting.

Other info: All of the 70-200s are awesome. You will love it! If it's your first L lens, you will be blown away by its performance, especially the focus speed. And it should be obvious, but using the lens hood outdoors will help too - it will increase contrast as well as help protect the lens.

Thanks. -- you are safe to assume nothing is obvious to this newbie!

I will try again tomorrow with corrected settings and see if my results are better -- and maybe ask more questions.

    Thanks again for your help.

This is the newest IS tech, leave it in mode 2. When you use a monopod the lens is smart enough to know to use mode 1, when you start to pan, it switches to mode 2 automatically, if it was in mode 2 to begin with.
