    Canon 20D or Nikon D70s

I currently own the Canon Rebel s2 (film) My question is this. If i go with the D20 would the lense from my rebel (35-105) work as well as the standard that comes with the D20? If so is the 300-400 price difference worth the money for the D20.

    Thanks in advance.

Your lens will work fine on the 20D, but it becomes a 56-168mm equivalent on the 20D (multiply by 1.6 to account for the cropping factor of the smaller than 35mm digital sensor). The D70 and 20D comparison really isn't a fair one, different levels of camera. The Rebel D and Rebel XT are better comparisons for the D70. Nikon has no replacement yet for their D100 yet, but when they do, it should be more of a Canon 20D level equivalent or better. In any event, the 20D is a slightly more capable camera than the D70, but, personally, I like the build of the D70 better, feels much more solid in my hands and for the price is probably at least as good a value if not better than the 20D. fyi, I shoot with a Canon EOS system (10D, 1D Mk II), and only the 1D and its variants feel more solid than the Nikon digital bodies imho.I'm staying with Canon because I know the system well after 16 years, and have invested heavily in their "L" lenses, but Nikon is right up there with Canon. What they lack in variety, they more than make up for in build quality. I haven't been thrilled of late with the build quality of Canon's cameras. Even the all metal bodied 10D and 20D feel less than robust in my hands. Just my 2 coppers, take with a few grains of salt of course.
Good luck in your decision ;)

I think the choice is between the D70 And D70S.Get whatever is cheaper.
I just don't see any evidence that the 20D is worth the extra bucks.
Here's a link to a direct comparison of both. It does show that the 20D has its merits.

Interesting review, some of which I question. I've played with both cameras at the AACD convention in Nashville, and personally I thought the D70 felt anything but plasticky, while the 20D, despite being an all metal body, felt decidedly toyish and plasticky, completely opposite of what the reviewer posted.

    Lionheart,
Good observation. He's biased toward nikon so I am supprised that he praised the cannon as much as he did.
I like his advice though, Just get one of em and start shooting!
Personally the D70 seems built for my hands and is quite solid. I don't see any benefit from a metal body. If the 20D were weather sealed It would be worth the extra bucks.
I wonder how long it will be before someone wakes up and make a WR plastic SLR!
    Two more cents, I'm broke,

Thank you all for your input.
In your humble opinion, the 2 extra mega pix and the 5 FPS vs 3 FPS is not worth the money for the 20d??????

    thanks again....

It's always worth paying more if you need it. In my case, I LOVE my 1D mkII, it is everything I want and need and more, so the price is worth it. Is the camera itself overpriced? Absolutely. But if you need certain features, or just plain want it and gotta have it, well, then you pay, and if nothing else, pretend you're happy with your overpriced purchase and decieve yourself into thinking and believing that it is worth what you paid

Re: Canon 20D or Nikon D70s

I just returned from BEST BUY near the BRIDGEWATER COMMONS MALL in NJ ;) BB stocks the DREB, DREB XT, 20D and D70.... GO TEST THEM , then buy from B&H (who sells them all cheaper)

Re: Canon 20D or Nikon D70s

I played with them both extensively at Best Buy while the wife shopped, and after about 30 mins of handling the D70 the muscles in my right hand started to cramp up (from turning the dials), which immediatly went away when I picked up the 20D. I have rather large hands, so for me the bigger body is a big +. Also, the 20D is wicked fast. FWIW, I have a catalog page for the 20D on my fridge.

Re: Canon 20D or Nikon D70s

I agree as I want a LIGHTER DSLR than my 1D and truely don't care if it's a NIKON or CANON since I own $1000's in glass for both.

I was holding both and the canon's felt better in my hands, then I listwened to the shutter on the XT and 20D and like the 20D that much more !

The jury is still out as to which (if?) I will get, but the 20D seems a good choice(besides the flash sync which the D70 wins on) FOR MY NEEDS.

disclaimer.... EVERONE'S NEEDS are different and all current DSLR are quite capable cameras IMHO, so the NEEDS are what should dictate the purchase first and foremost
