    Burn to dvd?

Last May I took some shots of friends and their booth at Folklife Festival in Seattle when I ran into them there and they saw my camera and wanted some shots to display when whereever they are is juried.
The shots aren't great as I was dealing with crowds and did not have a good spot to shoot from but they were happy with the ones I selected from about 30.
Recently saw them again and they would like some better quality as I only sent them jpegs via email.
I'm thinking I can edit them a little and burn them to a disc so they can use them however they feel is appropriate and I guess make any size they want. They did mention that they might want slides but I don't know if that's possible. I've never burned shots to a cd or dvd and figure this is the time to learn.
Any suggestions are appreciated but remember my technological vocabulary is probably not as up to par as it should be.
Do they have to be jpeg to burn is one question I have.
Oh! I do have them saved as nef files.

    Thanks for your time!

You can burn them as nef files Frog, but it will do your friends little good if they don't have software that can read nef files. Likewise with psd and other file formats.

Unless you have a Mac, I'm afraid I'll be of little use in burning your cds.

    Re: Burn to dvd?

Slides can be made from digital files, but it's quite expensive and not very common. I doubt they'd need it these days, but it used to be more common with art submissions (from what I've heard).

Jpegs or any other type of file (such as NEF, PDF and DOC) can be burned to a CD or a DVD. It's just information, and the disc doesn't care what it actually is. A CD can hold about 700 megabytes of information (0.7 gig) and a DVD can hold about 4 or 4-1/2 (don't remember exactly). If you have the ability to burn a DVD and you have more than, say, two CD's worth of pictures it might be easiest for everyone to do it this way. Buy CD-R's or DVD-R's at your favorite local office supply store - DVD's are more expensive per disc but probably cheaper based on how much they can store (neither is particularly expensive).

How you burn a CD or DVD is based on the software you have (Roxio is a common one). I'm one of those Mac guys and could explain it if you have a Mac, but for anything else it will be different.

I wouldn't give them NEF's for two reasons. First off, they can't do anything with those files without a program like Capture NX or Adobe Photoshop. Secondly, if they do work on your NEF's you'll have no say in how the final image should look. I usually shoot RAW too, but do what you need to do in the software you use and then convert them to JPEG at the highest quality (lowest compression). I'd also take it pretty easy on the sharpening. Re-sizing can affect how sharpening looks.

Ok....thanks. I didn't intend to give them the raw files but wondered if burning tiffs would give them higher quality than jpeg?

Also, if you burn jpgs to a CD, or a DVD, too, I guess, most modern DVD players will display them as a slide show. I don't know about tiff, or other formats.

    Re: Burn to dvd?

A tiff file should be no different than an original highest res jpeg file. The jpeg only really starts to show deterioration in quality if it is editted and resaved several times. Assuming your friends use the pics as you provide them, it shouldn't make any real difference.

Agree - a TIFF file will be a lot larger in size, but chances are no better for the purpose.

    Re: Burn to dvd?

Well as you only have 30 photos just burn them to CD, and you should have room for JPG, TIFF and RAW(NEF) files.

For the Windows users: I can think of many burning programs in fact I use at least four programs Nero, came with the burner, ChetaCDburner will brun ISO images, and MagicISO will rip and burn ISO files, and but not least CDClone copy program an OLD version.

For Mac users: Toast is the only program which I'm aware of, a very easy to use program.
