is there a difference between which ones to get? just surfing around i found that Maha brand seems to be the leader but i really have no clue. whats the difference in performance between 1700mAh, 1800mAh, 2200mAh, or 2300mAh? whats the best for digi cams?

The more mAh the longer they will last, so get the 2300's if you are looking for batteries. Remember that normal batteries are 1.5v and rechargeable are usually 1.2v as well so they don't last as long as normal batteries do. Something to keep in mind.

I've been using Maha NiMHs for 3 years now, just replaced a bunch of them a couple of months ago (they're starting to refuse to take a charge). They're supposed to be good 500 charges, but I haven't actually kept track. We use them daily with our MR-14EX ringlights and A70 digicam(we use the A70 for quick portraits for the patient chart). They've definitely saved us a little bit of money-probably about $1200 minus about $100 for the batteries and chargers. I don't know if they last longer or shorter than regular batteries, but they definitely cycle the capacitors on the flash a LOT faster than regular alkalines. The bad part is that they cycle consistently-no warning that they're running out of juice. When they're drained, they'll have just enough juice to keep the flash circuitry on, but not enough to charge the flash's capacitors no matter how long you wait. I keep 4 in my flash, plus 8 spares at all times for my own photography.

With my little Kodak digicam, I'm using the 'Digital' brand rechargeables with good results.

Wal-Mart has a kit with 4 batteries and a fast charger, with house and auto power cords, for $20. Additional 4-packs of batteries are about $9.

If you're doing any sort of heavy shooting, I'd recommend having enough batteries to make up at least three full sets - one set in the camera, one set charged and ready, and one set in the charger.

Also recommend, if you go extended periods (weeks or months) between shoots, that you freshly charge all the batteries just prior to the shoot. NiMH do lose power when they're 'parked'.

    Re: which AA NiMH batteries?

I've been using "Digital" brand too, for about a year and a half. They're 2100mah and held up very well. Bought the batteries and charger on ebay but can't remember how much - it was a pretty good deal at the time. 2100's were one less than the highest capacity available at the time (2200) so they were a lot less expensive, and the difference is only about 5% less capacity.

My experiences have been the same as the others - battery level indicators on cameras are worthless with these; just plan on always having spares with. Storing batteries with a fresh charge doesn't do much good, even if less than a month. Re-charge them just before you use them.

I've been using Panasonic 2100 m/a batteries with my 550Ex speedlite and have been very happy. I get around 100 flashes before I need to swap in fresh ones. BJ's wholesale club offers a car/home charger with 6 AAs and 4AAAs for ~20 bucks. I picked up an extra set of eight AAAs for around $10.

24 pack for $30. I've bought from them before and they're wonderful.

Cool, thanks. I guess my question was if any charger could be used with any battery.

Yeah, as far as I know any charger can be used with any battery.
