50D? I thought Canon was upgrading the 5D?

I heard tons about Canon coming out with the predicessor to the 5D, but now they announce the 50D. Will there be an upgrade to the 5D?

We all thought they would. And they still might. Here's a short article and a forum post that might make you feel better:

Thanks for the link. The ISO on the 50D looks impressive. I can't wait to see the new features on the next-gen 5D.

I purchased the 40D at Calumet, not knowing its replacment was on the horizon. But at the end of the day, I'm feeling some regret that I didn't chose the 5D after all.

    [Rant]
Calumet sold me hard on the 40D, telling me that the 1.6 crop factor would be great for macro and would extend my telephoto lens. Neither of these statements turns out to be is true. And for Macro, they raved about the 40, even though I asked about the 5D. Turns out I can get much better DoF from the FF.

I have worked with Calumet in the past and I think they have solid experts working for them, but I'm disappointed about this purchase. Its my bad, since I let them make the decission for me.

If they come out with an upgrade to the 5D, I may see if I can sell off my 40D and buy a used 5D instead.

What's true depends on what you want. The 1.6x crop factor does give you more telephoto reach and does increase depth-of-field when you're doing close-up work. Those are both reasons why I prefer the 1.6x crop factor Canon bodies. But if you want shallower depth-of-field, full frame is the way to go. You can get shallow depth-of-field with the crop factor cameras. But you need better lenses and it is more difficult.
