What's the best way to scan or print old film?

I have a lot of old negatives in a variety of sizes (35mm, 126, 120, 220, 4x5) that I would love to have scanned into digital format. If that's not possible, I'd also be interested in having prints or contact prints made. I don't want to do it myself. And of course, I'd like to do it as cheaply as possible, while using a reputable service.

Any recommendations? Is anyone out there scanning or printing these old film sizes?

Hello!

Probably your best bet is to invest in an Epson V700 scanner and do the scanning yourself. Additionally since I notice you're in CA, visit thedarkroom.com they are experts in this, and have even partnered with Ilford to provide traditional B&W wet darkroom printing!

Thank you, Axle. I'm not interested in doing it myself. (I spent too many years working in labs, and have neither the time nor patience.) But The Darkroom looks like a good possibility. I also found GoPhoto and Bay Photo, both of which are closer to me in the Monterey Bay area. Anyone used either of those?

I think I need to start with organizing everything -- separate slides, negs and prints; toss as much as I can manage; put everything in archival pages (I might hire a student to help me); make contact sheets from the negatives; scan anything that's a keeper. Then, make photo books out of the good stuff!

I've looked at Bay Photo...however they are mostly aimed at Digital realated, where as the Darkroom is dedicated to film and will treat your stuff right!

I can also suggest to buy Epson Scanners that can be used to scan documents and films. These type of scanners comes with variety of film holders from 35 mm films and you can easily manually scan any size film. For home operation V 600 is the best option. If money is not the issue then go with V750.

If money is not the issue then go with V750.

Although nice, the V750 may be overkill unless you really want to do some wet mounting for scans, the V700 will do just fine.
