    Made the plunge

    Hi Everyone,

I recently purchased my first film SLR (first SLR camera period) and I am having great fun with it. It is a used Canon Rebel Eos XS with a 30 - 80 mm lens (I hope I got that right). I love the challenge of film, because I am forced to really think about the composition of my shots. I just had my first two rolls of film developed, and a few of them had weird discoloration on the sides of some of the pictures (orange on the color shots, and yellowish on the B&W). Does anyone have any idea what would cause this? Also my B&W prints came out kind of greenish. I guess that is what I get for having my film developed at CVS

I can't wait to get out and practice some more and look forward to learning from the rest of you.

Congrats on the camera joy Do you have any scans of the discoloration that you could post? Hard to say exactly what the problem is from your brief description. Could be lab error, or heat damage or....? Also, what film were you using?

Congratulations for getting into film. The problem could be at the developing stage. I had a similar issue with a store with my B&Ws, but they turned out much better the second round. You may also want to try processing your own B&W in a darkroom. That's where the fun is.

You'll really want to look for a reliable store that can produce good quality prints for you. Unless you're shooting on positives, it's not that easy to tell how your final shots would look like.

I was using Kodak B&W, I don't have the carton in front of me to tell you exactly which one it was. I went cheap on the processing because I was paranoid the camera wouldn't work. The one I have now is one of two (same model) I purchased in a week. The first one I had to return because it didn't work at all.

I am going to take my remaining film to Penn camera and see how that goes. In the meantime I am going to drag out my scanner to get those negatives taken care of. Hopefully I will have samples for you to view in the next day or so.

I am hoping to buy a place next year, so maybe I can set up my own dark room then.

You don't have a light leak do you in the camera?

Second, the film once exposed didn't get hot on one side of the cannister like being near the output of the car heater or something like that?

Was it new film and was the expiration date good?

It even could be that the processor had dirty chemicals or didn't handle your film well.

Do post some samples and better luck with your next outing!
