Long lost Provia brought to light

I knew I had shot a couple rolls of Provia slide through my Canonet, just couldn't find them since the move until today while looking for something else in a container.

Unfortunately I don't have the greatest scanner for slides but it will have to do. The slides, of course, are far more vibrant and sharp. Here's just a few samples.

wow, I just checked these photos on my wife's laptop and they look a tad washed out as compared to what they look like on my Mac. Any ideas on how to make a photo consistent across platforms?

Is your monitor calibrated? I bought the cheapest Spyder product (~$65) and it has made a huge difference. One thing I've read, but don't quite understand, is that the native gamma settings for Apple are lower (maybe 1.8 or 2.0) than PC (2.2). I don't know how Apple users usually account for that, but there must be a way.

DOH! I know, and it's only going to get worse as I'll be changing up my work flow over the coming weeks

They look good to me Ray!

That is on the Calibrated NEC CRT monitor.

It's calibrated for sRGB, i.e. the internet, and I've got all the appropriate lights on so it looks 'right'.

That washed out look is because of the lack of range and contrast in the laptop/notebook's display. Even with calibration it most likely won't look very good. Mac Book Pro or one of the new HP or Dells set up with the 'good' displays for notebooks.

The Safari Browser has built in adjustments for displays and differences in file types. Sebastian wrote some detailed info about it. If you can't find it let me know and I'll see if I can dig up the information.

I've very disappointed in not being able to find a LCD for less than 'a lot of money' for home use. I've got the Sharp HD TV set up as an alternative monitor for my notebooks. It looks much better and it too is calibrated.

For 'work', and that is sitting right across the room, are these big new LCD monsters that cost well into 4 digits.

The HUEY Pantone PRO with the light sensor for ambient light is a great low cost solution. When you set up the monitor and leave the colorimeter on the stand it adjusts your display to changing room light if needed.

I really like the dock picture! Only possible improvement for me would be if the background were just a bit more OOF.

That third one is a neat mosaic. Is it a poster?

Hey folks,

I went back onto the laptop and checked the pics again...this time they didn't look too bad. Still not as vibrant as the slide, of course, or my Mac, but not too bad.

Paul, yes my monitor is calibrated but it's been so long I can't remember how I calibrated it. I think it's more or less calibrated for prints so perhaps that's why my pics don't always come out as they should, although I do use the sRGB color space for all my web photos.

drg, that last picture was a mosaic from the Western Center for Archaeology & Paleontology in Hemet, CA, in the water exhibit. I've also got some neat pics of reconstructed animal skeletons that I'll try and see if I can scan.
