Kodachrome development is hard to find!

As many already know, Ritz Camera isn't doing all that hot lately. They're shutting down several stores in San Diego and the one near my house is kaputt. I stopped by there to pick up a roll of Kodachrome I had dropped off a few weeks ago - they had called and said it was ready - before they shut down, and it wasn't even developed! The envelope said "Service not offered." I wonder why: last I heard there was only one place in the country developing KR in the midwest somewhere.

Anyway - with Ritz gone, not sure WHERE to get Kodachrome sent out now.. The local grocery stores used to do it but they stopped messing with film over a year ago. The pro photo store here doesn't either.

Any suggestions? Pretty soon it will be such a hassle and so expensive that nobody may bother with KR anymore :cryin:

Dwayne's Photo in KS still develops Kodachrome. A roll of 36exp Kodachrome will run you $9 for developing. I have used them within the last year and they do a great job.

I just found out tonight that one of our local big box stores stopped doing 1 hour development. Not that I care, I don't shoot hardly any C-41 film any more. If I do shoot it, it's nothing serious. I did have a roll of Ektar 100 I wanted to get developed this afternoon though, so I took it to Walgreens.

Mike - Thks for the info. $13.95 for a roll.. ugh, that is quite high, and doesn't even count the cost to mail to them. Time to re-evaluate the cost of KR..

$13.95? You must be adding in the scanning charge? From the looks of it, you may be better off having someone scan them locally for you. I don't know how good a 6.5mb scan is going to be for making prints.

it's $9.00 per roll of 36 and $4 to ship (only $.50 per extra roll). Still $13. And that doesn't even count the cost to mail it to them.

Throw in the cost of the film and we're now paying $20+ to shoot and process a roll of KR.. wow.

Yeah, it gets expensive. I don't shoot much KR at all. From the time I purchase it, it might be a year or more before I actually shoot it and send it in. By spacing out my costs, it doesn't seem so bad. When I shoot E-6, I usually wait till I have several rolls and then send them all in at once, to cut the shipping cost.

Got a Walmart near you GB-1? If so, the cost is only $6.88. Use the film drop bags and write in the special instructions section. I use Walmart's send out service (ie, Fuji's labs) to develop all of my 120 and they do a great job for super cheap and pretty quick. And E-6 development is an absolute steal at $1.88!

Thanks Brad. Multiple Walmarts around me -- will try one the next time I'm there. Seems places are dropping film development one by one around here, hard to find a place anymore.. I hope the Walmarts in this area are still handling KR!

Guys, Just got my developed KR film back from Walmart. Nicely developed, no problems. Plus, it was only $6.88 + tax, a BIG difference from the ~ $15 it would have cost to send it in directly.

Perfect! Glad to hear it worked out for you. And shoot, that price is cheaper than a lot of places charge to develop 120 E-6. Gotta love Walmart!
