    Bought my first film....

Well I bought my first rolls of film since April of 2004. Yep I have not loaded a roll of film since I purchased the D70 in 04. Joy had to go to the big city (Lexington, KY) yesterday and I had her stop by a camera store and pick up a 5 pack of Porta and a half dozen rolls of TriX 120. I can't buy 120 around here so it took a trip of 60 miles to come up with it. Even than she found the pickings pretty slim in the 120 category. Now it's time to tape up the new Christmas Holga and fire away. I'm excited about shooting with the new toy camera. I'm doing some shots to be used on a CD cover for a musician this weekend and thought I might shoot a roll with the Holga just to see if I could get something unique. Now my problem will be finding someplace to process the film.
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

Welcome back OT What did you end up picking up for Portra? You know you could always develop the B&W yourself You could always send out through Walmart for the Portra if you don't have any local labs. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with

    Happy Shooting,

    Re: Bought my first film....

Still have it all but, I packed all the film processing and printing gear up years ago and put it in storage. If there was a time share or rental lab around I would consider that but don't have the desire at this time set one back up myself. I had Joy get ISO 400 Portra since I was getting the Tri X I figured using one ISO speed would kind of get me use to how the Holga saw the world.

    Re: Bought my first film....

Those are two EXCELLENT Holga films Lary.
    It's what I use afterall!
    :biggrin5:
I also really like Fujichrome 100 Provia,it gives great Holga results.
But I'd stick with what you have for now.
Go Larry! Go Larry! GO! GO! GO!
I am seriously looking forward to seeing what you and your Holga come up with! The square format will be PERFECT for your project! I am envious! Your musician will LOVE what you come up with.
    Some suggestions:
Bracket, use both apetures, until you know what your particular Holga is capable of.
Use lot's of duct tape. I use a strip on the top and bottom, on the back. I also use a strip on each of the metal clips. It helps keep the back on.
I would also recommend making a two piece flap to go over the frame counter window.
If you have any questions, by all means feel free to email me directly. If you want, you can even call me and I can talk you through some of this.

My Holga only has one aperture. If you look into the lens and flip the switch back and forth, you can see that the smaller of the two is in front of the larger one, so the larger one does nothing. I put a piece of tape on that switch too, so it doesn't get left in the middle, which will almost completely block the light passing through the lens. That's just part of the fun.

    Yo're right.
I buy mine from www.holgamods.com, and he modifies them so there are two apetures, that are "about " f/8 and f/11.
    Holgas are FUN!!!
Every photographer should have at least one!
    I have SIX!

Duct tape on a camera to hold it together. Sounds like combat photography. I love it. I knew a guy that played street hockey with duct tape holding most of his gear together and he looked like a true warrior.

I use Portra 160vc in my Holga, too. I love vivid-colored, blurry, vingetted photos

I've had a roll exposed for over a week and can't find anywhere to get it processed. I had a couple of young guys look at me with wide eyes and tell me they had never seen anything like that in their lives. Help!!

OT, Mike says Walmart will do it. The lab that they send out to will process it but, the counter people may not know that.

Yup, I have had Walmart do it with MF slide film, but you will have to educate the people behind the counter first. They didn't knwo what MF film was, and they had no idea what E-6 processing was. I have not tried taking MF C-41 to them. I had to explain everything to the people behind the counter, then they had to call their lab and ask them.

If you don't trust them, Photo Craft is a great place to send film to. Shipping can get kind of expensive if you're only sending a single roll though.

    Sorry to hear that Larry!
I think my local lab could help you out.
Check them out at www.borge.net, see if you can ship it to them, have them process it and send it back.
Their normal processing price is around $6, I am sure they'll charge you shipping too.

    Good Luck!

    Re: Bought my first film....

Thanks guys. I tried my local Wal Mart and just blank expressions from both the young man at the counter and his supervisor. Looks like I'll have to bundle it up and ship it off. I'll probably wait till I've got a few more rolls.

That's the same response I got. But I convinced them to call the Fuji lab they send the film to. That lab will do it, at least the one my local Walmart sends it to.

Our Walmart will either print your 35mm in one hour, or if you don't want to pay for that service, they send it to a Fuji lab in MN. That's tha lab that can handle the big stuff. The downside is, they don't use the dip/dunk method. They use a mini-lab machine. The results I got back were fine tho.

    Re: Bought my first film....

I'm going to check with a couple of other photographers in the area to see if they know of anywhere semi local, if not than I'll just have to trust Uncle Sam's service to get me to a qualified lab.
