shoot on film and use a pair of scissors and some splicing tape......
seriously though this is a tough question and it gets muddied by things like formats, hardware, budget, plugins, workflow etc.
The big players at the moment are:
Adobe Premier Pro, Final Cut Pro, Avid, Media 100, Pinnacle Editition
This list could be narowed to Final cut pro and Avid but i am yet to be convinced that any of the packages i have listed is so much better than any of the others that there is a hands down winner.
Well I can't get Premier Pro( i dont have service pack 2), i cant get final cut pro( i have windows, so that leaves Avid I'v herd good things about that so I'm going to look into it.
I've been Art Director on about 5 projects that were edited on an Avid suite and I can tell you it is quite a remarkable little software.
However I would have to agree that it really depends on many things as to what editing suite you should get! Avid is a great start, you might wanna check out to see what other add-ons you can get to improve overall performance. As always rendering is a hell of a wait!
Personally i believe that when it comes down to software it's usually about what makes you comfortable. There is no best as in 1 software, the ONE, there is the ONE that's right for you, get the trial versions and try it! You can also get Avid Express for free, which has all you need really, unless you are planning on going deep into editing!
PS: The cutting with scissors idea is not a bad one really!! Not so easy but a lot of fun!
