    Best advice I'd give when starting out is buy 'Understanding Exposure' by Bryan Peterson. It's about $15, a really clear read with extensive examples throughout and will let you hit the ground running.

    What he said, Bryan's book is a good photo 101. Use your histogram to determine proper exposure. Understanding histograms. Expose (to the) right.
