Isn't it a "given" that each successive generation builds on the merits of the last generation. That is, today's camera will have the same if not better color rendition, dynamic range, noise at comparable ISOs, etc... So what's left to improve? Until recently, it was megapixels and high ISO performance. Now it's primarily high ISO performance. That's why the fixation is there.
