Lens Hood

Hi,

First, I want to thank you for everyone for giving me inputs to buy my first D-SLR camera.

I have another question. It's about lens hood.
- How important is lens hood? Is it a must to have one or later is fine too?
- Is it true that lens hood can improve IQ (like sharpness, contrast, color maybe)?
- Does the lens hood has many option about it's shape? if it so, what kind of shape should i buy for my lens

My first lens is 17-85mm IS USM with XTi camera, and the diameter of the lens is 67mm.

I almost always use lens hoods. They shade your lens from stray light that can affect things such as exposure, contrast (etc), and introduce things such as lens flare and ghosting.

So if you're shooting outside I'd recommend it. If in a controlled environment like a studio or if you're using on camera flash (the hood can cast a shadow with on board flash) you can take it off.

Most hoods these days are the flower pedal type. They offer more coverage without causing vignetting. With longer zooms or telephotos usually a regular round hood gets the job done without vignetting issues due to the longer focal lengths.

I keep my hood on at all times, just to help protect the lens.

i always use the lens hood, besides it keeping stray light out it protects the front element, $4 is cheaper than new front glass....

I just check some store about lens hood, and a hood for my lens is CAD$49.99 (Canon's lens hood)

btw, do you guys have any idea about a good tripod for a budget CAD$70 (tax included)?
I saw a Pro Tama Tripod MHT 3530, it's quite cheap CAD$ 59.99, 3 way pan head, can do vertical shot, centre column hook, and it's light : 1220grams.
For that kind of price i couldn't find any tripod with that kind of feature. but is it a good tripod for that price?

I'm pretty sure you can get a generic lens hood for much less than that.

As for tripod you won't be sorry to save your money for a good one.
"Professional" is a very loose term, usually used to describe low quality items.
That being said, I don't have any knowledge of that particular tripod.
