Is this a good buy/package combination?

    Battery and other
    Canon NB-2LH Lithium-Ion Battery (7.4v 720mAh)
    Canon BG-E3 Vertical Grip/Battery Holder

    Flash
Canon 580EX II Speedlite TTL Shoe Mount Flash (Guide No. 190'/58 m at 105mm) for E-TTL II

That is a pretty good looking package. I would question the need for some of it however. Specifically the 580EXII. Do you need, will you use that much power? Do you need a weather sealed flash. The camera body and lenses you have selected are not. You might want to consider the 580EX or the 430EX. Both good flashes and they would save you some money.

A good tripod is always handy to have around. Manfrotto makes some good combos in the $250 price range that are very suitable.

But the 580EXII recycles faster, and has a battery door that doesn't feel as if it's going to break each time I open it, and a simple push/slide lock instead of screw, and has a metal shoe instead of plastic.

Quite apart from its weather resistant design, for me it has been worth it.

Ok, I forgot about the metal foot. I wish my 580EX had that.
